Trade name vs legal name — they’re not the same amendment
Your trade name is the brand or shop name you operate under (what’s on your signage and invoices); your legal name is the name on your PAN and constitution documents. Both are filed as core-field amendments through Form GST REG-14 under Services → Registration → Amendment of Registration → Business Details, and both require officer approval within 15 working days. A trade name change results in a revised GST registration certificate being issued.
The step people miss on a legal name change
Your legal name on GST is pulled directly from the PAN database — you cannot amend it on GST first and fix PAN later. If you’ve had a legal name correction (a spelling fix, a post-marriage name change, a company name change after ROC approval), you have to update it with the Income Tax Department against your PAN first, then file the GST amendment once PAN reflects the new name. Filing the GST amendment before PAN is updated is the single most common reason these applications get stuck or rejected.

For a legal name correction: a Registrar of Companies certificate or an amended partnership deed, depending on your business structure. For a trade name change: proof of the rebrand — a board resolution, updated partnership deed, or equivalent supporting document explaining the change.
