MSME Registration (Udyam) in Chennai

MSME (Udyam) Registration is free on the government portal, and takes 10-15 minutes if the data is right the first time — but “if the data is right” is where most self-filed applications go wrong. Wrong NIC code, wrong investment/turnover figures, or a mismatch against your existing GST/PAN records causes rejections or a mis-classification that’s a hassle to fix later. This page covers what MSME registration actually gets you, the current classification limits, and what we charge to get it done right the first time. Call or WhatsApp us on 70 9232 9232.

What MSME (Udyam) Registration actually gets you

Udyam Registration is the government’s official recognition of your business as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise. For a B2B business with ₹1 Cr+ turnover, the single most useful benefit is one most owners don’t know about until it’s explained: if you’re registered as a Micro or Small enterprise, your buyers are legally required to pay you within 45 days (Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act) — if they don’t, they lose the tax deduction on that expense for the year, and owe you interest at the RBI-notified rate on top. This single change has made unregistered B2B suppliers noticeably less attractive to work with since it took effect in April 2024 — buyers now have a direct financial reason to pay MSME-registered vendors on time, and to prefer them over unregistered ones. (Note: this specific 45-day rule applies to Micro and Small only, not Medium, and doesn’t apply to traders.)

Beyond that, Udyam registration also opens up collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, priority-sector lending rates from banks, government tender set-asides and fee waivers, and delayed-payment interest protection under the MSMED Act itself (separate from the tax angle above). None of these require anything beyond having a valid Udyam certificate.

Classification limits (revised, effective 1 April 2025)

Your classification depends on both investment in plant/machinery or equipment and annual turnover — you’re classified by whichever threshold you cross first:

  • Micro: Investment up to ₹2.5 crore AND turnover up to ₹10 crore
  • Small: Investment up to ₹25 crore AND turnover up to ₹100 crore
  • Medium: Investment up to ₹125 crore AND turnover up to ₹500 crore

Given the target businesses we work with (₹1 Cr+ revenue B2B — ecommerce sellers, restaurant/cloud kitchen operators, contractors, manufacturers, professional services), most fall into Micro or Small, not Medium — which is exactly where the strongest benefits, including the 45-day payment rule, actually apply. Your classification is re-verified automatically every financial year against your ITR and GST filings, and updates automatically if your numbers cross a threshold either direction.

What we actually do

  • NIC code selection — matched correctly to your actual business activity, not a generic guess that causes a mismatch later.
  • Investment and turnover figures cross-checked against your existing GST/IT filings before submission, so your classification is accurate from day one.
  • Aadhaar/PAN/GSTIN verification handled correctly — GST is not mandatory for Udyam registration, but if you have a GSTIN, we make sure it’s linked properly so your turnover auto-populates correctly.
  • Certificate issued and explained — what it covers, what it doesn’t, and how to actually use it (e.g. citing the 45-day rule to a slow-paying buyer).
  • Direct access to your consultant — no call centre, the same person handles it start to finish.

Pricing

The government portal itself charges nothing for Udyam Registration — there is no official government fee. What you’re paying for with us is getting it done correctly the first time: right NIC code, right classification, no rejection loop. Mistakes we see businesses make

1. Picking the wrong NIC code

The National Industrial Classification code determines how your business is categorised. A generic or wrong code doesn’t just look sloppy — it can cause your application to be flagged for review, or misclassify what kind of MSME support schemes you’re eligible for.

2. Entering turnover figures that don’t match GST/IT records

Udyam cross-verifies your entered figures against tax department data in the background. A mismatch — even an honest typo — can trigger a rejection or a later reclassification that catches you off guard.

3. Not knowing the 45-day payment rule exists — or how to use it

Plenty of businesses register for MSME status and never actually use Section 43B(h) as leverage with slow-paying buyers. Knowing this rule exists — and that it’s your buyer’s own tax deduction on the line, not just your invoice — changes the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Is MSME (Udyam) registration free?

Yes, there is no official government fee on the Udyam portal itself. What a consultant charges you for is getting the NIC code, classification, and figures right the first time, so the application doesn’t get rejected or need correction later.

Do I need GST registration before I can register for MSME/Udyam?

No, GST is not mandatory for Udyam registration. If you already have a GSTIN, providing it lets the system auto-fetch your turnover, which is more reliable than entering it manually — but you can register without one if you’re legally exempt from GST registration.

What’s the real benefit of MSME registration for my business?

For Micro or Small enterprises specifically, the biggest practical benefit is Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act: your buyers must pay you within 45 days or lose their own tax deduction on that expense, plus owe you interest. Beyond that, you also get access to collateral-free loans, priority-sector lending, and government tender benefits.

Does the 45-day payment rule apply to Medium enterprises too?

No. Section 43B(h)’s 45-day rule applies only to Micro and Small enterprises, not Medium, and does not apply to traders (retail or wholesale).

How is my MSME classification decided — investment or turnover?

Both. You’re classified by whichever threshold you cross first between investment in plant/machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. As of 1 April 2025: Micro is up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover, Small is up to ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore, Medium is up to ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore.
